Flights to Newquay

As well as their usual flights from Manchester to Newquay, BMIbaby have just announced a new service from East Midlands Airport in Leicestershire from 18th December this year.

This comes after Easyjet last week which operates 10 routes, said it was to leave the airport after Christmas, putting 120 jobs at risk.  Like Ryanair recently, blaming their decision on increasingly high operating costs and the immanent rise in Air Passenger Duty, which will increase in November.

BMIbaby’s managing director Crawford Rix, said:”bmibaby and bmi have operated from East Midlands since the airport opened in 1965  and is an embedded part of the local community. “We continue to be a champion of the consumer market – currently we are offering no credit and debit card fees on all flights, and skis and snow boards fly free of charge on bookings to any of our ski destinations.“

Seats can be booked for dates during Summer 2010 (28 May to 12 September) for flights to Newquay on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday for a fantastic £18.99 one way including taxes and charges.

After resuming its flights from Stansted just 5 months ago, Ryanair has confirmed its Newquay-Stansted route is one of the winter flights it is scrapping from 1 October because of costs.

The carrier returned to  Newquay Airport on March 2. After it had earlier cancelled its services following the problems with the handover of the Airport at the end of last year. At the time branding the airport’s owners – Cornwall County Council – “Keystone cops”, after failing to secure the aviation licence.

The company said that Stansted was one of its most expensive bases, and added that an increase in air passenger duty tax, which will increase from £10 to £11 in November, was also a factor in its decision.

The company had warned in July it would cut the number of aircraft it ran at Stansted by 40% in its winter schedule. It has been common practice for Ryanair to reduce the frequency of flights to various destinations during the winter season and this year, the 16 aircraft it was withdrawing fromStansted would be switched to other European bases.

Teresa Timms, public relations manager of Visit Cornwall, said visitors could still find other means to get to the county by plane. “Obviously we are disappointed, but there are another seven flights a day from Gatwick to Newquay through Flybe and Air SouthWest, so the county is very well served.”
