Eastern Airways the recent owners of Air Southwest, decided in September to cease all its flights out of Plymouth Airport. With Newquay’s very close association with Plymouth, services were reviewed but were found to be not financially viable.

As a consequence, Air Southwest’s eight year association with Newquay Airport has ended and routes to Glasgow, Guernsey, Jersey, Manchester, Aberdeen, Bristol, Cork, Dublin and Leeds Bradford have for the moment ended.

Al Titterington, Newquay Cornwall Airport’s managing director, said: “It is a sad day for air services to/from Cornwall with the closure of Air Southwest.  Air Southwest dominated our domestic route network, meaning other carriers were restricted with the services they could offer and the demand for air services that would make them profitable out of Newquay”.

Since the announcement of the closure of the airline, Newquay Airport Management have been in discussion with a number of airlines and already have announced replacement services to Manchester (Flybe) and Glasgow (Loganair) and flights for the summer are on sale to East Midlands, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dusseldorf, as well as charter holidays to Dubrovnik, Lake Garda and Madeira

Newquay Cornwall Airport continues to fly up to three times a day to London Gatwick, up to four times a day to Isles of Scilly and four times a week to Manchester.

Avis UK has recently been awarded two prestigious trade-voted accolades, Best Business Car Hire Company and Best Holiday Car Hire Company, in this year’s British Travel Awards. The British Travel Awards, authenticated by Deloitte LLP, are widely referred to as the ‘Oscars’ of the travel industry and recognised as the market’s benchmark for excellence.

Avis is the official car hire partner to both Flybe and Air Southwest and is now the only car rental company with a desk in the arrivals hall of the airport. The desk is located with easy access from both the arrivals corridor and the terminal entrance and is manned throughout the day during airport operational hours.

Airport Parking

If you have made arrangements for someone to meet you after your flight, there is a drop off point and parking places for over 500 vehicles in 2 car parks situated either side of the Airport Terminal. There are also currently 10 designated parking spaces for the disabled which are located near the main terminal entrance.

Airport Taxis

The Cornish Taxi Company ‘BioTravel’ has recently been awarded the contract to run its Environmentally Friendly Taxi and Minibus service from the Airport. BioTravel taxi and minibus fleet use Biodiesel which is a renewable fuel produced from processed waste vegetable oil and pure Rapeseed. Bookings can be made in advance or upon leaving the arrivals hall at the BioTravel Airport Onward Transport Desk. Typical cost of using the Bio-Shuttle is £3.90 person to the centre of Newquay.

Airport Buses

Service 556 is run by the Greyhound Company from the Airport to Newquay Town centre or north via the coastal route to Padstow. Airport to Newquay Town Centre costs £2.70 per single journey. Service 410 is run by Summercourt Travel who provide an on-demand service between Newquay and Newquay Airport that requires pre-booking. They depart every 30 minutes at times to suit flights and operate every day that the airport is open. Airport Car Hire

There are 2 car rental companies on site Hertz and Europcar. Eurocar opening times are: 08:00 to 22:00 Monday to Friday and 08:00 to 15:00 Saturday. Hertz opening hours are: Monday, Tuesday and Friday 07:00 to 19:30, Wednesday and Thursday 07:00 to 21:00, Saturday 07:00 to 20:00 and Sunday 12:00 to 21:00.

Newquay Cornwall Airport has just been honored with the prestigious ERA (European Regional Airline Association) Airport Achievement Award for 2009/10. The award was given in recognition of the Cornish Airport’s remarkable achievements from April 2008 to March 2009.

The European Regions Airline Association (ERA) is the principal body representing air transport in Europe. Founded in 1980 with just 5 members, ERA has grown since 1987, to represent 181 companies and is the only body representing the interests of the regional air transport industry in Europe. Members include 59 regional airlines, 25 airports and 97 associate and affiliate members comprising aircraft & engine manufacturers, international & regional airports and avionics suppliers & service providers.

The judges were particularly impressed by the transition of the Airport which had been highly complex and required significant new infrastructure to be built or upgraded to meet the Airports’ operating requirements. The works were all undertaken whilst the Airport continued to operate for both military and civil commercial aircraft.

Accepting the Award , Al Titterington, Newquay Cornwall Airport’s Operations Director said: “This endorsement, coming from the aviation industry, is extremely appreciated. The judges understand the airport business well and will appreciate the effort and dedication of all those at Newquay Cornwall Airport who worked so hard to make our transition from military to civilian airport such an outstanding success.”
