Winter scheduling and the demise of Air Southwest and its domestic routes, had left Newquay Airport with just a handful of flight destinations by the end of last year. Flybe have now reversed the trend by providing 7 routes in their summer scheduling, the first being a brand new route to Norwich International Airport.

Flights to East Anglia’s main airport will begin operating twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 5 May and 22 September. (see timetables) Norwich Timetables

This will benefit the population in both areas as each are favourite holiday destinations. Norwich although set in the heart of East Anglia is just 20 miles from the coast, so there’s easy access to Norfolk’s fantastic beaches and traditional seaside resorts like Southwold and Cromer.

Also on the door step is Great Yarmouth and the Norfolk Broads, where over two million people visit every year, exploring by land or water or a combination of both.

The City of Norwich its self is well worth a visit. Once having the largest medieval wall around the city, Norwich is still the most complete medieval city in Britain. Strolling through the winding medieval lanes around the impressive Castle and beautiful Romanesque Cathedral you will find a modern cultural city with beautiful heritage, vibrant nightlife, sophisticated shopping and plenty of restaurants.

From the Airport there is easy access to the city centre by Bus and Taxi which is just 4 mile s away.

Eastern Airways the recent owners of Air Southwest, decided in September to cease all its flights out of Plymouth Airport. With Newquay’s very close association with Plymouth, services were reviewed but were found to be not financially viable.

As a consequence, Air Southwest’s eight year association with Newquay Airport has ended and routes to Glasgow, Guernsey, Jersey, Manchester, Aberdeen, Bristol, Cork, Dublin and Leeds Bradford have for the moment ended.

Al Titterington, Newquay Cornwall Airport’s managing director, said: “It is a sad day for air services to/from Cornwall with the closure of Air Southwest. Air Southwest dominated our domestic route network, meaning other carriers were restricted with the services they could offer and the demand for air services that would make them profitable out of Newquay”.

Since the announcement of the closure of the airline, Newquay Airport Management have been in discussion with a number of airlines and already have announced replacement services to Manchester (Flybe) and Glasgow (Loganair) and flights for the summer are on sale to East Midlands, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dusseldorf, as well as charter holidays to Dubrovnik, Lake Garda and Madeira

Newquay Cornwall Airport continues to fly up to three times a day to London Gatwick, up to four times a day to Isles of Scilly and four times a week to Manchester.

After being taken over by Eastern Airways in September, Air Southwest has announced it is cancelling its London Gatwick service from 1st February.

After being taken over by Eastern Airways in September, Air Southwest has announced it is cancelling its London Gatwick service from 1st February.

Previously in May last year, Air Southwest withdrew its flights from London City Airport due to plummeting passenger numbers and had warned that the airline would continue to seek ways to cut cost to ensure it would survive. Further falls in passenger numbers and a planned 18 per cent increase in landing fees at the London hub are believed to be behind the decision.

The Devon and Cornwall Business Council has called the move a ‘major blow’ for its local economy. Council official Tim Jones said that many local business leaders weren’t surprised at the news however, and rather saw it as an inevitable event due to the high costs associated with service to Gatwick Airport.

Flybe are now the only airline with flights from London to the West Country and It is thought more than 4,000 passengers will switch to Flybe’s Newquay to Gatwick service as a result of the move.

Passengers all ready booked on Air Southwest’s withdrawn London service have been offered alternative air and rail transport.

Flybe will be offering an alternative flight on the same route free of charge and First Great Western will also honour tickets with Customers who wish to take up the offer, e-mailing FGW’s business travel with contact details and a copy of their Air Southwest ticket or booking confirmation.

The rest of Air Southwest’s schedule to other destinations has not been affected.

Air Southwest has announced it is to scrap its flights to the centre of London from Newquay and Plymouth.

The airline launched the London City Airport route just over a year ago primarily with business travelers in mind. Unfortunately the twice-daily route has not attracted enough passengers to make it viable.
The airline launched the London City Airport route just over a year ago primarily with business travelers in mind.

Volcanic ash drifting across the UK from an eruption in Iceland has caused the National Air Traffic Service (Nats) to ban all flights in controlled UK airspace, apart from emergencies, from midday to day 15-04-2010 until at least tomorrow.

This has affected flights from Newquay Airport in that at least seven out of the day’s 17 flights, going to the likes of London Gatwick, Newcastle and Dublin, have been cancelled.

The ash comes from a volcano under a glacier in the Eyjafjallajoekull area of Iceland about 75 miles east of Reykjavik which has been asleep for nearly 200 years.

The eruption is the second in the country in less than a month and caused local authorities to evacuate over 800 residents from around the glacier as rivers rose by up to 10 feet. This second eruption however has been 10 to 20 times more powerful than the first.

Volcanic ash is very hazardous to aircraft. Visibility is obviously a problem but also the ash is finer than talcum powder and ash dust entering engines can cause partial or total engine power loss. The ash can also damage aircraft ventilation, hydraulic, electronic and air data systems.

Hopes are that this plume of ash will soon disperse and flights can resume but volcanoes are very unpredictable and a bigger worry is that a blast from another much larger volcano Katla, which is located under the vast Myrdalsjokull ice cap, is also well overdue.

As a low cost Airport, Stansted London Airport has become a major hub for a number of European low-cost carriers with a majority of its flights operated by EasyJet and Ryanair. Being 30 miles North East of Central London however makes onward travel to the South West of England problematic.

With Ryanair stopping its Newquay flights last year, there have been NO direct flights to Newquay Airport since and none have been announced for the 2010 Summer Schedule.

So what are the options if you find yourself at Stansted and need to get to the Westcountry?

Internal Flights

Although there are no direct commercial flights to Newquay, it is possible to link indirectly via other regional airports. If you can catch an early flight out of Stansted, it is possible to reach Newquay Airport the same day. However if only late flights are available then an overnight stop or a long wait-over is more likely.

Connecting flights via the following airports:-

From Stansted

1st Leg

Change for Newquay

(check our Timetables)

CORK

Ryanair

AirSouthwest

Belfast International (from May)

Easyjet

Jet2.COM

DUBLIN

Ryanair

AirSouthwest

Edinburgh (from May)

Easyjet

Easyjet

Glasgow

Easyjet

AirSouthwest

Newcastle

Easyjet

AirSouthwest

Total flight time for these journeys is about 2 1/2 hours but overall the journey is going to take much longer.

Flying via Dublin could be the best option as this route has the most connecting flights throughout the week.

Train

There are no direct rail link so you will have to travel to London. The Stansted Express train runs to and from Liverpool Street station in London every 15 minutes and the journey time is 45 minutes to one hour.

This then gives you the option of flying from either Gatwick or London City Airports, or traveling from Paddington Station to Par in Cornwall then changing for Newquay, which takes about 51/2 hours.

Coach & Bus

For Coach and Bus transport from Stansted to London there are a number of operators who offer a regular service with frequent departure times. The Bus and coach station is opposite the main terminal entrance.

Coach tickets can be bought at the ticket desk in Arrivals between 06:00 and 01:00, in the coach station at anytime or on board the coach or Bus with journeys taking anywhere from 45 minutes to 11/2 hours and costing between £2 and £10.00.

These travel to London Victoria Station (Baker Street) and London Liverpool Street. You will then need the London Underground for the Paddington Station connection.

National Express Coaches offer the cheapest option with its Stansted to Newquay route. This goes via Heathrow Airport (1 hour transfer wait) and takes about 91/2 hours.

By their very size and nature, airports tend not to be close to your journeys final destination. So after your flight to Newquay Airport, you may require onward transport from the Main Terminal. The Airport fortunately is only 3 miles north from the centre of Newquay itself and of course there are a number of transfer services available.

Airport Parking

If you have made arrangements for someone to meet you after your flight, there is a drop off point and parking places for over 500 vehicles in 2 car parks situated either side of the Airport Terminal. There are also currently 10 designated parking spaces for the disabled which are located near the main terminal entrance.

Airport Taxis

The Cornish Taxi Company ‘BioTravel’ has recently been awarded the contract to run its Environmentally Friendly Taxi and Minibus service from the Airport. BioTravel taxi and minibus fleet use Biodiesel which is a renewable fuel produced from processed waste vegetable oil and pure Rapeseed. Bookings can be made in advance or upon leaving the arrivals hall at the BioTravel Airport Onward Transport Desk. Typical cost of using the Bio-Shuttle is £3.90 person to the centre of Newquay.

Airport Buses

Service 556 is run by the Greyhound Company from the Airport to Newquay Town centre or north via the coastal route to Padstow. Airport to Newquay Town Centre costs £2.70 per single journey. Service 410 is run by Summercourt Travel who provide an on-demand service between Newquay and Newquay Airport that requires pre-booking. They depart every 30 minutes at times to suit flights and operate every day that the airport is open. An onward transfer can be made in Newquay on service 403 which goes on to Truro, Falmouth and West Cornwall. Check Our Timetables for week day and weekend variations.

Airport Car Hire

There are 2 car rental companies on site Hertz and Europcar. Eurocar opening times are: 08:00 to 22:00 Monday to Friday and 08:00 to 15:00 Saturday.

With the clocks going back this weekend, many airlines are changing flight times and in some cases, cutting routes on their Winter Schedules.

With the warm sun fading on Cornwall’s beaches, flights to Newquay Airport will be reduced until the Summer schedules start in March 2010. Flights from some destinations will stop altogether while others will be changing departure times.

There will be no further services from the Isle of Man and Edinburgh will have no air link to Newquay Airport with Flybe until late March 2010. Jet2 will be stopping the only flights from Belfast until May 2010 and the connection between Birmingham and the West Country with bmibaby will be cut completely.

The colder weather however does offer the opportunity of a new route if you are flying from Newquay. Grab you Skiing gear and head for the Dauphine Alps. Air SouthWest are now taking bookings for direct flights to Grenoble and the French mountains, with a weekly service from late December.

So if you are planning a flight to Newquay especially this Christmas, make sure you check our revised Timetables.
